Love in Quarantine: How Are We Doing?

These days, most couples we hear from are doing what they can to simply survive the day-to-day of being in quarantine. 

Between new roles in working from home and also managing kids online schooling, new routines, and new “normals,” we’re seeing relationships where people are spending more time in the same space, but life demands are still pulling at the edges of connection. 

This is what we know — 

Life changes, people change, circumstances change – nothing stays the same, that is one thing you can count on!

This is why we keep telling couples to keep checking in with each other. 

Especially in these times, don’t think because you are doing something that has worked in the past, you can just continue to repeat it without re-evaluating.

It would be easy in this time of quarantine to assume that because you’re in your home together so much of the time, that you are close and connected. After all, you look each other in the face every day. 

Frankly, it would be easy to assume that your relationship is good simply because you are successfully getting work projects finished remotely, or because your kids' schooling is being finished week after week, and because you aren’t actively fighting with your partner all of the time.

The question that you need to ask yourself and your partner is: 

How are we doing?

We encourage couples to ask this and have a conversation every week, as a way of checking in with each other. It’s a simple way to stay on the same page, and to keep operating as the partners that you are. 

Plus, it offers you a way to prioritize your relationship and put the focus on each other, even when life’s other demands want to pull your attention away

In this time of forced togetherness, it could be easy to take your partner for granted. We want to encourage you to instead be intentional about finding time to connect.
